Suggestions for Mid-Oct. Fishing in New Paltz Area

My wife and I rented a place up in New Paltz for a weekend in October and I wanted to see if any of you have fished that area and had some suggestions/advice on spots worth checking out. The house is on the South end of town, walking distance from the Wallkill river, so I will definitely be targeting smallies in the river but any other suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'll be up at the Ulster County Fair Grounds this weekend for a KCBS BBQ Contest..Hoping to wet a line during the down time sat evening the Wallkill is right next door
