Deer Tails

Just got 5 deer tails from a friend. They were in the freezer with bone in. Aways bought my deer tails for jigs. Looking for some advice on cleaning and preserving the tails. I see that kosher salt, alum, and borax is needed. Where are alum and borax sold ? Thanks for any info.... Walt

PS Put them still frozen in my freezer at home

I never used alum? kosher salt and borax is all I used. Borax can be found in any grocery store in the laundry detergent aisle look for 20 mule team borax or just borax. go heavy on salt 60/40 don't shake it off what stays on stays on until dry. do not stack them pin to a board salt side out. hope this helps

Re: Deer Tails

I've dried out tails just using table salt.

Cut the Bone out on the brown hair side, this gives you untouched white hair.

Scrape piece of board and nail the tail around its edge, hair down and bare skin up.

I use table salt and use a lot of salt, couple days later brush the salt off and use more. Keep doing this till they are dry.

Once it's done clean off the salt and store in ziplock bag.

Split the tail and remove the bone.
Then soak and wash the tails in a bucket with Dawn detergent.

comb the hair out , and put the tails on newspaper, cover the skin part of the tail with just borax. and leave them dry out .
after about a week I take of the excess borax and stack them in a box.
