Live lining reel for snag and fish
Looking to get spinning reel with live liner feature. Will be snagging bunker and fishing for striped bass.
Thinking of penn V4500LL or V6500LL. Thx |

Re: Live lining reel for snag and fish
What exactly is a livelining feature on a Spinning reel if somebody doesn't mind explaining? I've never used a Liveliner but would prefer to use a spinning reel then a conventional next time livelining.

Re: Live lining reel for snag and fish
A friend has a pair of 6500s and loves them. They are on the larger side for Stripers. He uses his for Tarpon which they are a bit better suited for.
I'd say the 4500 would be better. It's got 25 pounds of drag but is a bit light on the line capacity side. Too bad they don't make the 5500 in a live line. The other reel to consider if your don't what to spend the money on a Thunnus is the Shimano 8000D. I've had one for several years now..I did have a few issues with the reel handle and over time the bearings got noisy. $30 and a trip to the Shimano factory it's back and performs like new.. It a very smooth reel and a big improvement over the 3500 and 4500. Fisherman120 live liner reels and bait runners are synonymous. They have a 2nd lighter drag that is build in the back of the reels which allows you to control line out tension with the bail flipped over. Once you turn the reels handle your are fighting the fish on the preset main drag. |
Re: Live lining reel for snag and fish
Shimano baitrunner 6000D or the older 4500B series and dont look back. Haven't had luck with the new penn stuff lately. I'd stick with the Shimano for under $200bucks.

As I mentioned above, a friend of mine has two 6500s, they are not the LL models and he's caught several large tarpon on them with out any issues. |
Re: Live lining reel for snag and fish
Yes Gerry i've seen it all from the LL feature, fit and finish, to crappy pot metal of the internals. The older SS models were the shit, the newer stuff just doesn't compare.

Re: Live lining reel for snag and fish
I've been very happy with my 8000D.....no issues after 2 seasons of stripers.
