Olcott and Pulaski Weekend

Back to the Salmon stomping Grounds for the 4th weekend in a row.

Got together on Friday night and off to Olcott we went to the snag capital of the world. Burt Dam.

Got to the place around 4am and already there were 15 cars in line waiting for the parking lot to open. As always place was an absolute zoo but having come 3 cars strong we quickly got our spots and made sure no one was able to move in.

Fish was sluggish and not a lot of fighters were around even though it was still pretty fresh. Limited out within an hour and half and spend the rest of the morning just having fun and nursing back the fish that was being released while snagged. Browns did not want anything to do with us and did not see a single chrome caught. Managed to hook into nice 8lbs brown but got him by the dorsal fin so back into the water he went. Out of 8 people that went 7 limited out with the last one just not keeping any fish. Around 2pm we got and headed out to Pulaski.

Got there around 5:30 and crashed for the night. Up at 5am on Sunday and off to Altmar for some more fishing. Fishing was more or less productive. Multiple hook ups and at th end of the day one more salmon and chrome were added to the mix. Great times, great people and tons of fun. There were almost no one on the river and pretty much we had multiple pools to ourselfes.

Now for the sad part .... Camera drowned at the Burt Dam and to top it off I did manage to loose my cars keys somewhere at Altmar I belive when I was stuck in a mud. Only good part I was not driving but still sucks to be me.

Fish on my friends, fish on.

Thank Thank you.

Jimmy,

Yeah usually something have to happen but those loses over the weekend I can live with. Plus still will be there this weekend again so maybe I will find them keys.

Eddy,

Weather was nice and cold on Saturday but Sunday was raining on and off so probably that made a lots of people stay at home. Town pool still populated with chrome for those looking for silver bullets.

Otherwise I only went through 3 bottles this weekend so its a good weekend for me comparing to the last two when I couldn't land a fish.

Cant wait to get out again since I doubt anyone would want me on the boat this weekend.

I'd like to do 1 last gathering at camp this yr, probably to cold for camping but a day of fishing after the crowds die down would be nice.

Definitely sounds like a good time!

Couple questions though. I've never been up there but have done some research on the subject. From what I gather, and correct me if I'm wrong. You drive quite a ways to get up there to almost literally fight for a spot, to catch fish that prob won't hit and need to be snagged, and may or may not even be edible depending on how long they've been in the river??? But they fight really well..... Kinda sums it up?

Not to mention another license purchase......

LoL that's pretty much sums up Olcott and Pulaski at beginning of November

Drive about 4 hours from where I am at which also depends on how heavy your foot is.

Wrong about snagging though. Fish will and does hit depending on variations of the bait you are using. It might take time. You might snag a fish or two. But you will get fish the proper way with some effort.

Currently you wont be fighting for any spots only the most popular holes might have more than a few people fishing them.

As far as edible goes. Been catching fresh salmon al the way to mid November but still do not find king salmon all that tasty so to the smoker they go. Coho and steel on the other hand are very tasty indeed and very god for consumption. Never caught Atlantic yet but that's the stuff you pretty much buy in supermarkets so here goes all you taste preference.

Now if we do go I want all the eggs being a greedy selfish bastard that I am. Must make more caviar and been find it hard to convince people to sell them to me.

Anyways it is a trip of a lifetime and doing it with crazy nj fishing crew is def. a perfect way to do it.

Good advice but I will have to disagree with the salmon biting of course a couple exceptions. They will still hit the first day or so while in the river at the very bottom, or an occasional one on a plug. But the majority of the time especially in the salmon river the fish have been harassed constantly throughout the whole river and very rarely actually bite. Remember just because a fly or egg or whatever your using ends up in the mouth doesn't mean the fish actually bit the presentation. I've probably hooked just as many in the mouth using sponge as I have with any other type of presentation. To catch constantly it's how you use it while staying legal. Once you learn it especially when you learn the river and know where the fish funnel though you can hook the majority in or very close to mouth.

Other than that I completely agree with what you said
