Wreck Fishing Bait?

Heading out on Saturday with my daughters on a party boat for a day of wreck fishing. It's been a while since we've done this type of fishing, and I noticed that someone posted about using Gulp to catch ling & cod. What typically do they take - kind of Gulp, size, color??

Any places in Brielle or Pt. Pleasant to pick up sinkers and hooks early in the AM?

Thanks
Jay

Jersey Hooker Outfitters in Brick will be open super early this Saturday. Call ahead to find out exact times. White and Chartreuse 3" and 4" swimming mullet has worked good for me so far this year...

You'll catch plenty of wreck fish with the clams the boat supplies.. You can use Gulp of course, but last week on the Mad Gaffer, the guys using plain clams caught as many fish as the guys with Gulp.. btw, the guys that DO use Gulp for bottom fish usually put a glob of clams on as well. Take that for whatever its worth..
Guys that tried plain Gulp never even got a hit on it, at least on my trip last week. I was told this by guys that tried.. I might be the only one, but I am not convinced Gulp outfishes plain old boat bait for Ling/Cod/Seabass/ Flounder etc... bob

If there are Ocean Pout/dog fish taking over the bite lose the Gulp and go to straight clams....it helped me target off of the pout/dog fish and onto the ling/cod.

Also with the clam I found it helped to put clam meat + a trail of clam snot....for some reason the loose seem to help as well.

correct.. Fish love the soft snotty part of the clam.. Problem is, it comes off quick.. I use both hard and soft parts on the same hook... bob

Strip the bellies and keep the snot on... I always keep the ribbons trailing. If you wanna change it up, try sand worm pieces with shedder oil. I've had trips where guys couldn't get away from the dogs using clams and I had a box of sandies with me. Dinner plate porgies and baseball bat sewer cod! If snowshoes are around they snack on the worms no problem...

Payjay are you anywhere near Clifton? PM sent with the sinkers I'll give you half bucket of gulp. But as others have said, clams are it. I try to grab whole ones and shuck them myself and keep them in my cooler. This way I know their fresh.
