Trout Magnets vs butterworms
Cuz here on njfishing turned me on to butterworms last month, and man do they work well. Someone else here told me about a jig he likes to use. So I decided to do the google search "jig fishing for trout" and stumbled upon the videos below. Who here uses trout magnets? I am curious. I like that you can drift fish them like bait (which give you advantages over using spinners) and it doesn't seem like they are easily swallowed by the trout.

Re: Trout Magnets vs butterworms
Trout Magnets are one of the best jigs out there except for one thing. Weak hooks! Granted if ya catch a snag, steady pressure on it will definitely bend the hook and you will get it back. They can be bent back carefully.
I throw them on the UL when I want to catch small bait size sunny's but have been surprised more than once by pickerel, bass, rock bass, etc! Best colors to me are Salmon (which my kids call mac n cheese) and gold. Next best thing to meal worms! |
Re: Trout Magnets vs butterworms
I've used trout magnets a couple of times, and wound up catching everything BUT trout! My go-to setup is still a 2" curly-tail grub on a 1/32 oz. head, it rarely fails to produce.

Trout magnets are great. You never know what you will catch on them. Biggest surprise thus far fishing them is a 24" pickerel.

Brian did you fish them with a float attached and 2lb test like they do on the Youtube video?

Re: Trout Magnets vs butterworms
Gotcha Brian. I will try it soon on the Rockaway. I asked because in one of their youtube videos, a fisherman was having no luck when he was using 2lb test. He switched over to a flourocarbon leader, and was getting hits from the trout like crazy. Had no idea that flourocarbon leader would make such a difference. Maybe it was just good marketing.
