Post Storm Troutin 6/4
Had the day off Thursday and decided to go harass some trout. Since it was only 2 days after the recent heavy rains I was reluctant to take the trip but all signs pointed to good conditions so I went. Glad I did......
Hit a good 2 miles or so of the Big Flatty and was not disappointed. First spot gave up a few wild brookies as well a some nice stockie bows. Second held only bows, but some of the best I've caught this year!! Real vibrant colors and nice acrobatics during the fight. Got em in all sections of the stream. Riffles and undercut banks being the best. Came across a couple big pools where the water seemed like it was boiling with fish. Prob was, they were only feeding top water..... So, I switched to a small floating plug, and they were blowing up on it top water style, some, as soon as it hit the water....... Great day, couldn't beat the cool temps and overcast skies. Can't wait to go back and hit the other few miles I havnt seen yet..... :).. http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/...G/IMAG1700.jpg.... http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/...G/IMAG1690.jpg..... http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/...G/IMAG1695.jpg...... http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/...G/IMAG1718.jpg....... http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/...G/IMAG1720.jpg...... http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/...G/IMAG1708.jpg |

.
That's awesome. I noticed driving over the South Branch of the Raritan and the Passaic River that the heavy rains we last week never caused the rivers to flood. I guess the soil was really dry and just absorbed the rain. . |

Eskimo, I wasn't sure about the amount of rain. Although I didn't go check it out, I thought the P by me was probably a mess. That was the other reason I went bank beatin elsewhere. Here's a couple more....... http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/...G/IMAG1717.jpg......... http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/...G/IMAG1704.jpg........ http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/...G/IMAG1706.jpg.......... http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/...G/IMAG1697.jpg......... http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/...G/IMAG1692.jpg |
Re: Post Storm Troutin 6/4
Another great report from you buddy. There's something about beatin the banks, it's special! Especially up north when you realize you haven't heard a car or saw human life. That's the best part of NJ in my opinion. You can get away from all the eastern corridor nonsense in less than an hour and enjoy life the way it should be! Good looking Trout!!! Keep it up!

Never did the fly rod thing for trout, but I will say, small poppers for smallmouth and panfish in the rivah is a boat load of fun !

Re: Post Storm Troutin 6/4
i took a lesson once...it was different. but the whole time i just wish i had my ultra light and a little box of small lures. we could see the trout and they wouldn't touch the flies. I decided not to invest any money into the whole fly fishing thing.
awesome troutin though! |
Re: Post Storm Troutin 6/4
Guys if you enjoy trout fishing the fly rod option is just a blast. It can get crazy with all the different rods, lines and flies but you don't need everything to start. I know that trout feed more than 80% or the time subsurface and you can catch more nymphing, but there really isn't anything like fooling a trout into taking a dry fly. You don't need to be a elitist to fly fish and you don't need to punch out long casts to be effective in NJ.
