I am not a captain or a mate but I fish a lot and often. And the two captains that responded know a helluva lot more than me but u don't need braid for stripers. When one sucks in that bunker...clam or jig...u will know. Mono will work just fine.

It's a nightmare getting the line untangled with braid. Stick with mono.

Way to answer a question with a question.

I've never had a problem on any party boat using braid. Now the tuna trips I do understand are different. I use a short length of mono as a bite tippet for blues and bass.

If I do get a tangle I just cut my hardware off and if need cut my line up higher. It's quicker to retie then to sit there and figure out a tangle.

The only braid that I've found that just about impossible to untangle is power pro.

It's common courtesy not using braid when dealing with bigger fish. If a mate gets that stuff wrapped around his hand while untying a tangle and there is a fish on one of the lines, he is gonna get cut.

The real answer is to ask the boat you're going to fish on...

As a general rule bottom fishing braid with a topshot is the preference.

I have different setups for party and charter boats. With a party boat for stripers stick with straight mono its easier, causes less problems and is fine fish to with whether fishing clams, jigs, or bunker. When bunker/stripers cross lines with braid and mono its a bad ending.

However some limited trips may say its ok, but again as a general rule, nix the braid for stripers on a PB.

Way to contribute a completely irrelevant post to the thread. Ever hear of a rhetorical question Einstein which is in fact a statement. If you're trying to stir the pot in this case with a very well respected poster and sponsor of this site, do it somewhere else. The captain is making a statement which I assure you most people who read BOOMER43's initial question had the exact same thoughts.
