Rod??
 

I started surf fluking last summer and I did really well. I have a cheap ocean fishing outfit that I would use to jig fluke from the surf. I want to upgrade. I was wondering what is a good surf rod. What length should I be looking at. I usually fished with 2 gulps(Mullet,jerkshad,shrimp,etc) and a 1 ounce weight. Thanks

St. Croix Wild River Salmon Rod. This is my go to surf fluking rod very light cast a mile it is also my early season back bay striper rod. Try it you'll buy it.

Is it true that a surf rod should have a stif tip. To give the lure/bait more action? I have a salmon rod that I don't use anymore. It's a 9 foot ugly stick rated from 8-20lb and .5-1.5 ounce lures. But it has a soft tip.

I use a $20, 6.5 foot freshwater rod from shore and it catches me plenty of fluke. Got one over 5 pounds on it last summer on a beach in Raritan Bay in about 3 feet of water. I caught hundreds of fluke last summer using this setup. If you're using gulp with a light jig or light sinker, go light. I catch way more fish when i use light outfits, plus it's more fun. Don't need to cast far for fluke if you know the right spots. I don't understand when guys use 9-12 foot stiff rods for fluke, takes all of the fun out of it. For the most part, 99% of the fluke caught from shore are shorts, at least have fun with the fight since you usually can't keep any. You really don't need to buy a $100-$400 rod for a fish that a 5 year old can catch, save that money for a blackfish rod.

The only ocean fishing I do now is going to be fluke. I want a rod that's going to last me. I caught a couple fluke at around 17 and on that was around 20 from shore this summer. Would I also be able to use the same rod for fluke and strippers. Because I might want to fish for those to. Thanks for the replys so far.

I have a house rented in august in ocean beach. Every year while I am there I try surf fishing with not much luck. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I use an 8' 6" Cabelas pro guide for Fluke and Stripers off the the surf. It's teamed with a Shimano Saros reel. I like the light weight action when it comes to the Fluke. I can launch up to 3 ounces of lead with this set up. It's just right for bouncing bucktails or dragging bait along the bottom. I also have a 7 ft St Croix with another Saros reel on it, not the cheapest combo but it gets the job done. The Cabelas rod is probably around 55 bucks these days. The St Croix can be found for 100 bucks or less. Good luck out there!!!
