RV lakers through the ice

I've never ice fished RV, or any deep lake for that matter. I'm used to fishing through the ice in no more than about 30 feet of water, so I don't have a lot of line on my tip ups.

Do you still need to go real deep for the lakers through the ice, or can I set up where it's 30 - 50 feet and have a shot at them?

It's possible to catch Lakers up shallower this time of year, but if you're targeting them specifically then deeper water would be the way to go.

When I still had a 9.9 my greatest trips were from Jan-Feb open water or ice. Best depths for me were 70-95 fow. Others may have a different opinion but I highly doubt they have an 18 lb Laker in there archives. Lots of rat Lakers caught recently so sometimes you have to take a walk away from the crowds. HINT!!!!!

I'd get away from everyone fishing the main ramp at RV! Take a nice stroll! It's usually worth it!

Are you fishing right on the bottom for them or do they suspend in the winter. I opened water fished it and always caught them right on the bottom but never iced fished for them. TIA

Usually right on the bottom to 5 feet off this time of year. Yes, they can be all over the place, in the water column at different depths. When you get into a pack of them you'll know it. They feed fast and fierce, eating everything in there path. Fun fish through the ice. Use the biggest Shiners you can get your hands on. GOOD LUCK!!!!

I fish for lakers in Kensico reservoir in westchester. We hit them in 60-70 feet in the summer suspended 40ft down. Consistently 4-8pounds but bigger up to 15 pounds get caught.
