Last minute ice plans

Woke up this morning and my wife had the idea to keep the kids home today. Her and my son are having some mommy/son time and she said maybe I could take my daughter out for some first time ice fishing. Well she didn't need to twist my arm!

Here is my question. I would like to take her to RV or possibly Spruce Run. Can anyone give me a heads up on the best access that is kid friendly? I had read that the only ice at RV was the swimming side and accessible from the rocks only. Is this still the case? How about Spruce Run?

I know its last minute but any help is appreciated.

Best bet would be to go t RV. You are correct the swim side has some safe ice but the rocks are not all that bad when walking down to it. As far as Spruce goes you might have to drive around for awhile to find some safe ice and most likely it will be in coves. Last time I was there it was still slushy and not even close to being safe to fish on.

For the money I would go to RV unless you want to drive a little bit further up from Spruce Run then I would hit up Oxford Furnace lake.

Hope that helps.

I was at Spruce saturday trying for big Pike. I was off the boat launch point, 4-6 inches of ice off that area. The coves where a few of my buddies were fishing are now holding a beautiful 8-12 inches of happy ice. Hit the coves but stay away from the deep water near and heading toward the water tower. The coves are perfect! GOOD LUCK!!!

Thanks guys. Decided on staying local to home for time reasons. (AKA across the street from home) Nothing wanted to eat.

Highlights of the day:

1- Spending quality time with my daughter and getting her on the ice for the first time.

2- The guy yelling from his car stopped in the middle of the road that "the ice is not safe and we are going to get yelled at by the police"

My reply, "your ice sensor in your car needs to be calibrated, we are on 10" of ice!"

The 2015 skunking continues!

Bad day of fishing is still better than a good day at work. And even 100 times better when enjoying it with family.
