Lowcountry Flats Redfish Trip
 

During Teacher's Conference I took my family to Charleston SC. My son, Matt, and I enjoyed 6 1/2 hours flats redfish fly fishing. Tough day. Never saw a single cloud & on occasion looked for one. Hit the mid-60's. Stiff breeze. Day before was perfect w/80 degree temperatures. But we caught some up to 6 pounds. Height of the outing came pretty quick when I hooked my first. Besides a little foot long red a caught in FL, this my first, at least 10 pounds. It looked huge when it darted for my Seducer, which this time I placed perfectly. I thought 15. Had it on five minutes before hook pulled.

We had practiced in a soccer field for months w/10 wt and we can say that although practice helps, it won't suffice for being on the water.

I grew up in South Carolina and fished out of Murrell's Inlet for 40 years. There used to be flounder inshore and now there are redfish. Off shore there used to be red snapper and now there are sea bass.
The redfish bite this summer was so/so. I didn't get a chance to get down in October when the big bulls come in, but my buddy's son got a 42 inch fish about a month ago.

42 inch would be about max for the flats we fished. I thought mine was about three feet long, but the Captain said not that big. We've been thinking, for years, of going down to Ocracoke and fishing the big bulls in November. I would prefer to go early in Nov., but the only plan we have is to go over Thanksgiving, once my son's in college & has that time. Have to look into this more closely. Word I've got is that Oct. is really the month. I guess blues will be hitting that late for sure, but going all the way down there, we'll want something special.

The word that October is the month to go is the correct word. Unfortunately, I am usually busy at work in October and Novermber. I have a friend who is a charter captain who will put me up in a Pawleys Island condo and take me out as a freebie any time I can get down there. Way back when he and I had 100 flounder days with a lot of 8 and 10 pound doormats mixed in.
I can usually take a few days in February and March to mix up some hog hunting and fishing.
My job lets me fish a lot in June, July and August so I can't really complain.
