Ice picks and a vest don't mean crap. If you go through and somehow manage to get out, you can still easily die from hypothermia. This happened to a father/son team on Assunpink Lake about 8 years ago.

In my 72 years, I have had two of my ice fishing buddies die when they were too trusting of ice thickness. I believe that both of them went down and drowned when they walked across a thin spot where an underground spring made the ice thinner than the rest of the lake.

Personally, I won't go out on less than 8 inches.
