Trolling RV 10.26.14

Trolled RV today from around 2pm until about 7:30 when it got too dark to see the leader boards. Was using Rapala J9 and warrior spoons while trolling about 35-40’ deep with leadcore and planer boards.

Caught a 17” laker on a spoon and then later a perch and a small bluegill which was barely bigger than the lure. All catch and release.

Also snagged and broke off a couple of lures, that has been happening a lot lately. Was fishing in pretty deep water so this was surprising. Maybe I was trolling too slowly and got too close to the shore. Do you guys often lose lures trolling RV?

I have a paddlewheel speedometer for my fishfinder which doesn’t really work at slow speed. Can one of you guys recommend a gps speedometer for a small boat, maybe a handheld or something? I tried using the iPhone aps for speed but they didn’t seem to be accurate at low speed. What do you guys use to measure trolling speed if you don’t have gps on your sonar unit?

I have an navionics app on my iPhone and it's dead on with speed, matches my gps unit and another one as well. I wouldn't be trolling anywhere near the bottom now, fish are up shallower now. Was there yesterday marked them up high but no takers, lotta fish by the launch ramp area tho. Good luck.

I would try trolling shallower water this time of year if you're fishing for Rainbows and Browns. Deepest I would run is 1 to 3 colors of lead core in 20-30 feet of water.

thanks for the reply guys, i will try that app. my iphone battery dies fairly quick though, won't last the fishing trip. what kind of gps unit do you have?

Zack, i will try fishing shallower, you are right i am probably too deep. are the lakers also up high this time of the year or just browns and bows?

Just Browns and Bows this time of year since they're trying to find a feeder creek or stream to spawn in. Since there's no such thing in Round Valley, they basically just keep swimming the shoreline in a circle for the season. Lakers are usually stacked up closer to the North and South towers this time of year for their spawn.
