Deep water fish release?

At the end of every year I do an offshore seabass trip, fishing ~200' water. Invariably, I always see a few shorts come up, get tossed over, and see them either make it back or, usually, die (barotrauma, seagull, etc.). Any thoughts or ideas here?

I did some searching on the net and found this:

I thought it was very interesting that it referenced our East coast fishery. I also liked the embedded video:

The goal of my post is to self-educate and see if there is anything I can do to help our beautiful fishes.

Thanks!

I left related videos at the video section:)

unfortunately to do research properly on the matter pretty much necessitates the use of a barometric chamber and those are not cheap...

Check out Shelton-fish-descender, cost about $6.00.

Re: Deep water fish release?

Simply take the tip of your hook and slip it just under the skin somewhere on the head. Lower the fish back to the bottom and lift the tip of your rod sharply and the hook will come out of the skin. Problem solved.
