Longshot 7-26 On the Water Fluke Seminar Report
2 Attachment(s)
I gave my annual fluke seminar on the Longshot with Captain Chris & FJ. Had an eager group ready to learn how to catch cardboard. My students were ReelRon,The Directa,Ling Louie XIV, Billy Lavalette, & Cafish Steve. Started out same area we crushed em last year & had a few shorts & undersized skates. Chris said fudge that & made a run to the deep, same thing a short here & there& undersized skates, not being what Capt Bauer wanted he ran back inshore near the hook, got 1 keeper & a couple a shorts not much life so Chris made a long run down the beach a bit. here I started to show how it was done as we started catching some n ice keepers, stayed a slow pick all day but it was all quality maybe 2 or 3 18 inch fish majority were over 20 inches. I had 7 keepers & was high hook thus proving as I do once a year I am an amazing fluke fisherman. Total for the group was 18 keepers all really fat fish biggest was over 7 with alot in the 4-6 range we also had a dozen mountain trout caught mainly by Lou & Ron who are the new Kings Of Ling, & a few 4spots. Not 1 sea robin :( .
All color bucktails & gulp! worked for me as long as it was white. I cannot say enough about the Longshot as Chris runs a fine operation & has the hunger & drive thats needed to put a catch together even when the bite is slow & fj is there to help ya before you can ask for help. we left the dock at 630 & did not dock until after 4 as Chris pounded the area we found the quality at. making short drifts over the area none of that 3 mile dreaming b#llsh!t!If you wanna go fluking on a 6 pack in the hIghlands area call him right now . Also I gave fluke a try again, stuffed it with crabmeat & put it on the grill. & the crabmeat was great but the fluke tasted like styrafoam! still do not get what tastes good about these dumb flat trash fish!!!!!!!!!!!! Thankfully Jen grilled hotdgs & ReelRon gave me some extra ling he had caught the other day with Tagged Fish!! Oh well time to put the bucktails away until this weekend next year & get back to gamefishing as its almost time for the trigger, ling & pilotfish run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Damm, I read all that and had to take another nap! Got to admit Joey put a beating on me and he had Lou & the Director talking to themselves! Great Job by Catfish Steve also! Billy, I still want to see that monster you dropped!
Good day Joey, thanks for the invite. |

Fluke is good as sashimi with ponzu or live oil, lemon and sea salt. Cooked fluke sucks, not nearly as good as flundies.

If you insist on cooking fluke (instead of eating it raw as god intended), it's the last fish I'd chuck on the grill. There's almost no fat in fluke, and the only way I'd cook it whole is drenched in olive oil/herbs and roasted in a high oven. Even then your window is under 30 seconds or so between flaking off the bone and cardboard. Breaded or battered and fried is the way to go...make some sandwiches or tacos! |
Re: Longshot 7-26 On the Water Fluke Seminar Report
only way to cook a toothed flatfish is whole in my opinion but all i do is catch big fluke :) but the fluke on the grill actually was good according to the peeps i cooked it for put it in foil with lemon & olive oil & cooked it for like 12 minutes at a low temp, the crabmeat & lemon helped keep it moist
