Armed with my new fishfinder, I headed to Dows to rent a boat and do some fishing. Around 9, hooked up with a nice size rainbow. Half hour later lost something HUGE which I assume to be a striper. Should have called it a day after that as once water temps went into the 70s we couldn't buy a bite. Couple that with choppy water and brutal sun, I now feel like I was thrown from a moving car!

All in all it was good day but since hopatcong seemingly kicks my ass one way or another every trip, does any one know of or can suggest another body of water in this state that rents boats? I would like to have another option

I think spruce run, cranberry and lake musky.

not sure of other places, but a good idea is to look up some guides online. Many of the freshwater guys are VERY reasonable and about the same money as renting a boat and motor. U learn ALOT about that body of water and how to fish it, its like being spoonfed everything u need to know about that species/lake

Captain Dave Vollenweider, who is a NJF member(Muskynut is his user name), is a great guide. I would contact him first :).

yup capt. Dave is top notch, really good fisherman. Most of the guys on that list are licensed captains, which u have to be in NJ on navigable waters under the juristiction of the coast guard. Freshwater that is not tidal/navigable does not require a captains licesnse, theres no guide license either in NJ, but there is in NY and PA go figure

Hiring a guide is pretty good advice not only for the use of their boat, but gaining insite about the waters they take u fishing on...But if money is an issue l Then renting a boat maybe cheaper, Shepard Lake and Waywayanda come to mind as far as boat rentals go, both are smaller than L.H. and may be easier to learn their secrets..But they not exactly cheap either..Good luck in your pursuit...

You can throw senkos around the docks right now and catch bass, you can catch panfish with a worm and bobber anywhere on the lake.
