what size lure?
 

I am mostly a fresh water fisherman and want to expand my "horizon". Just bought a Trevala 6'6" MH & Avet Magnetic 5.3. If I want to use artificial lures to catch striper, what size (weight) lures should I use for Kastmaster, Kroc or Tsunami Swim bait (plan to fish at the NY Harbor near the Governor's Island)?

and what's the best rigging set up?

P.S. 2 weeks ago, I tried 3 oz bucktail and didn't even got a bite (current was so strong that I couldn't keep the bottom so I attached another 5 oz sinker on 3 way rig). I also tried 3 way rig with 8 oz sinker with bunker. Yes, I got skunked fishing from 7pm till 1 AM from a boat near the Governor's island.

Ok I might get shot here...but Ill help you and maybe the Gods will help me with my 50lber...first move to a different island;)then drop the lure...and chunk some bait...you will kill em.

Crocks work best when Bunker are around and Savages, Deadly Dicks and AVA when the Sand Eels show up. Best thing to do when you are fighting a current is to cast into it and let the lure flutter down as it comes back towards you.

What size metal lures should I use? Do I need to hit the bottom with Kroc or any other metals? or do I keep it on the surface?

1st
If you need to fish Governor's Island you have to do it near the pier where the Dallas and Galatin docked. When the IRT (subway) was built the debris were dumped there to extend the island and most of the shoreline is very shallow. Roosevelt would be a better island to fish and On the Water magazine even did an article about it.

2nd
I used to throw big rapala and rebel lures 10+ inches and had some success. This time of year as stated before big crocs should produce. If you decide to buck tail there be prepared to donate some tackle.

I don't need to fish Governor's Island. My Captain thought it was a good spot - I will tell him I will throw him overboard. :) He will have a mutiny next time.
I will tell him to go to the Roosevelt Island.

So I should throw 5+ oz buck tail and Krocs or Kastmaster then? Hit the bottom with metals?

Crocs and Bucktails come in ounce sizes and the size you will need will vary on the current your are fishing and how you intend to fish it, top, bottom middle etc so there is no set answer.

As far as keeping it on the surface.... these metal lures are not surface lures sometimes jigged just off the bottom and sometimes casted and retrieved... Once again no set answer here.
