Ice Smallies...
 

Hit the ice yesterday with Mitch, Andrew, Mark and Mike. With the sun up and it warming quickly, the action started early with smallies coming through the ice before we could even set the third tip-up. Decent bass all morning with a few good perch mixed in and several missed run-offs. These were some of the healthiest most beautiful fish I have seen in awhile, awesome colors. Around noon it clouded up, the temperature dropped and the bite died off with only the occasional flag. Late afternoon a few guys had to pack it in but Mitch and I decided to stay out until sunset. We got a few more flags with some perch and a snot rocket and then the best one of the day. Flag pops… fish is running hard… I dive on the tip-up, set the hook and then start pulling in what seems like a mile of line. Get him to the hole and it’s a big smallie. Lifting him out of the hole the leader breaks and he falls back in… CRAP… I plunge my arm into the water and right as the fish hits the bottom of the hole I’m able to lip him and pull out a nice 3 1/2lb fish. Damn… where’s the GoPro when I need it… you had to see it to believe it…

Jim, never seen anyone thrust their arm so quickly through a hole into freezing cold water to get a fish that broke the line...Dude, you were like a freaking heron and you got that fish IN IT'S OPEN MOUTH!!!.......If I didn't see it with my own eyes , I would have never even grasped how cool the words you said described it........Anyway, I'm really happy you not only caught your first bass of 2014, but some nice ones....That's what fishing is all about, when a "rookie" gets something nice........I was glad I was able to be there when you and Keith(PGAProfishional) were able to get em through the ice for the first time, along with all the other guys from this site who caught the ice bug this past winter.hopefully the seed has been planted........that's what fishing is all about.......fun and friendship........we try to leave the bullsh*t at home for a few hours and get out there and escape daily life's issues..........I'm gonna try a few more times this winter to get some more ice bass, just lmk when you can go.....Company was good, the weather for the most part cooperated and the wind wasn't too bad either, and thanks for the sandwich also...Only thing missing from this report was a bear sighting!!.......LOL...Maybe next time...........Here's a few more pics I had in my phone......Ice Ice Baby!!!

Nice post gentlemen. Mitch thanks for the honorable mention. Was never a big ice fisherman because the Passaic (my Local Joint) is usually receptive during winter months. Skunk City can attest to that.

This year it has been cooler than previous times. The ice-fishing has been spectacular! I've had so much fun out there...but like most, I can't wait for the ice to melt.

Went at it again yesterday w/ Dan but got my first ice skunk all year....we had a few flags but fish weren't smashing the bait like the other day...It was still a nice day out....Got some cool pics out of it...good luck to everyone this weekend.......wear sunblock!!....get a tan!!!...:cool:
