Ice rod set up???
Wanted to know what is everyone using for line on their ice rods? I see alot of colored lines out there, so you tie direct or floro leader? Is there a mono for ice fishing?

What about backing under the braid?

I use the same set up as Mark. You can't go wrong, and yes backing is necessary. That PP ice line is awesome!!!

Re: Ice rod set up???
After fishing through the polar vortex w/regular 15# spectra freezing up on me, i got a hold of some PowerPro Ice-tec on sale from Cabellas. I set up my 2 rods with 5Lb and 8Lb. They came in 50 yd. spools so i had to do some guestimating on how much mono backing needed to load my reel before topping it off with the Ice-Tec until my spools were at full capacity. I tie a tiny barrel swivel to the business end then a fluoro leader. All I've jigged up during my last 2 outings were perch and pans but it's been way better then my old set up.

Re: Ice rod set up???
peel off whatever u have on and leave a solid covering of the old line and then do a uni2uni or a good braid/mono knot and spool up all the ice line. Then take the tiniest swivel u can find (i like spro) and throw on 6-8# floro about 2 feet long. the little swivels go right thru the guides. On my light rod I have 4# floro all the way including leader, I like Pline. On my medlite setup I have 8# fireline ice and a 8# floro leader. havent used PP ice but any of the braids are good as long as they are ice braid, they fuse the line so it doesnt absorb water.
