Trip South w/ Boat?
 

I'm thinking of dragging my bass boat south this late winter / early spring. Would like to find a campground on a quality bass lake where I could spend a few days fishing with my son. Anybody done this kind of thing? Any ideas?

There's a ton of good lakes in S. Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Florida has the best winter bass fishing, but it's also a drive. Check out Santee Cooper Country (Lakes Marion and Moultrie) in South Carolina. I've been there a few times catfishing and they have nice state-run campgrounds. I know the lake is a top destination for bass fishing and the Elites have a tourney there every year. There's also Lanier and Oconee in Georgia. Not sure if you have a bass boat, but keep in mind a lot of those good southern lakes are river impoundments and massive compared to NJ waters. If you really wanna take a drive, Guntersville in Alabama (pronounced Gunnersville) has incredible bass fishing. I was there in the late winter a few years ago and had the best bass fishing of my life. Five-pounders are all over the place in that lake. Hope that helps.

Figure how much time you have. Then get a map and draw a mileage radius. Work within that.remember you'll be towing. Sounds like a good adventure.

Okeechobee. You could also hit some of the canals while you are down therefor some snakehead/ peacock action.

Yeah I was thinking about Okee. There are Peacock down there?

Sure if there are other folks who want to go maybe we can rent a cabin. Only 2 fit on my little bass boat though!

Okeechobee is known for winter fishing, no doubt. If you have the time I think it's worth it. There are places with peacocks too. I'm sure you can do some digging online and find them. I know they privately stock them in some small ponds and the fishing can be phenomenal, but then you're talking $$$ for a guide with access.

Lanier is a killer striped bass destination, and holds a great population of LM and SM too. Anything south of the virginias will be fishable all winter long, just make sure u do your homework on bass behavior in warmer areas, they hold depths much different in lakes that dont freeze over. Basically look for videos/info on pre spawn and winter fishing. Dont know how close u need to be to the lake but u can easily find cheaper hotels down south that are 50-75 a night a few miles away and just pay launch fees for the few days you will put the boat in, on water cabins/lodging is usually a rip-off no matter what the season
