70 people hurt by attacking fish

i thought this only happened in hollywood

(CNN) -- Their Christmas Day did not go as planned.

About 70 people were injured Wednesday when a swarm of carnivorous fish attacked at a beach near the city of Rosario, on the Parana River, Argentina's state-run Telam news agency reported.

It described the fish as a relative of the piranha.

No one was killed.

But swimmers suffered various injuries, including a 7-year-old girl who lost a part of one of her pinky fingers, Telam said.

Ricardo Biasatti, sub secretary of Natural Resources for the province of Santa Fe, described the incident to the agency as "isolated and insignificant," when the size of the river is taken into consideration.

Julian Aguilar, president of a local fisherman's group, also downplayed it, saying the likelihood of such an event happening again was low, as attacks by this type of fish on humans are "occasional."

The area is a popular swimming spot this time of year in Argentina, where it is summer.

yeah really.. Look I don't want to see anyone anywhere injured.. however, these people are locals and probably know damn well what swims in the river.. The fish belong there, its their home, and they are just trying to survive...
Give them their space... bob

Reminds me of a summer day around 8 years ago right in close to the beach at Seaside. A real three ring circus with the ferris wheel spinning, people in the water, six large party boats nose to nose and a huge school of giant blues boiling on top in a feeding frenzy. The people were actually swimming towards it with the life guards going beserk screaming GET OUT OF THE WATER!!! and blowing their whistles like banshees. Man, nothing spooked those fish. They just kept swimming by like squadrons of B-52's.

Just goes to show how stupid people can be... I realize of course that blues don't eat people.. However, when they are in a feeding frenzy, and someone gets bit and the blood starts flowing into the water etc, who knows what may happen on any given day..
the water belongs to the fish and other sea life... We are the intruders, and sometimes carelessness comes with a tragic cost... bob
