tioughnioga/chenango rivers
 

Anyone fish tioughnioga or chenango rivers? Just bought property up there and very close to river. Reports look good but wanna hear first hand.

Loaded with smb, walleyes, Pike,, Tigers, all kinds of fish,,, The tioughnioga has lots of nice trout too.. Browns, bows and brookies.. The chenango is more warm water species.. smb, tigers, walleyes.. I am pretty close to that area.. Feel free to PM me... You are also close to the finger Lakes as well.. Some good fishing in the area, but like anywhere else, he fish aren't everywhere, and you'll need to put some time in and ask questions of the locals... bob

Thanks Bob! I bought a few acres in Freetown. I always drove over the tioughnioga on my way up to Salmon River. Always thought it looked good, dec reports looked good as well. I see an east/west branch, I guess the chenango is the southern end? Google maps is a lil confusing.

You are also near the Otselic River which is stiff with walleyes.. My friends from work have been mohawking walleyes, SMB, and even a few Pike,LMB and a some crappies , even in this frigid weather, right at the spillway from the Whitney Point res.. Thats all of 11 miles from Freetown, and those walleyes are always there.. Minnows under a bobber, from shore, no waders needed.. pretty tough..lol.. You are in a great spot there... Close to Southern Tier, right down 81 and the Finger Lakes region as well... PM me if you ever need specifics.. There are a lot of Walleyes in the local rivers, tigers, Pike , SMB as well.. Fingers are mostly trout lakes, and are ultra hellava deep, best fished with downriggers, but you will catch your share flatlining or casting in all months but JUNE-OCT.. just have to put a lot of time in.. These are 40 mile long, 2 miles wide, and 600 feet deep, so there is a LOT of room for fish to hide.. I catch lots of lakers with jigs, pretty easy to do, bows, browns, salmon are tougher, but you will get them if you fish for them.. I do better with Walleyes and SMB, because I fish more for them...
Chenango is in the southeastern part of this area.. Its shallow and rocky. Find the pools.. There are smb, tiger muskies and walleyes.. With the Otselic and Tioghnioga so close, you won't need to bother going there.. Probably some big channel cats in these rivers too, as they all drain eventually to the Susquehanna, and there are some massive cats in there.. I no longer fish for them, but when I did, I used 8 foot salt water surf sticks, 20 pound test, 4 oz sinkers, and blufish size hooks.. They are next to impossible to get to shore on light tackle, they will break your line every time, in those snag filled, upwelling currents... I thought you bought a place near Oneida lake??... bob

Thanks for the help. I will definitely be picking your brain next spring. I do have a place by Oneida/salmon river. Town of Amboy. Had a small M&G few weeks ago. This is new land. Its so cheap upstate.
