On the Navesink River in central Jersey-

You can still go crabbing off the bulkhead and short pier in Marine Park in Red Bank, NJ.

and.....

A few miles East, down River Road, you can go crabbing off the town pier in Fair Haven, NJ at the end of Fair Haven Road.

Both places are easy to get to and have adequate free parking. The pier in Fair Haven has a small open pavilion on it so you can get out of the sun if you want to. In both place, bring your own crab bait since you can't buy any close by. If you are not using crab traps, also bring a long-handled crab net to scoop up the crabs clinging to your baited line. In both places you will be about 6-8 feet off the water depending on the tide.

In both places you can fiddle around catching snapper bluefish from July thru September while you are awaiting crabs on your lines. Again, bring your own bait.

Keyport Municipal Pier (free). Off the pier or along the Bulkhead it's a good spot. Also check out the free Snapper Derby on 24-Aug, all kids registered get prizes !! http://www.keyportonline.com/filesto...ntest_2013.pdf

Last time I was there they had a limit of 1 trap per person. Is it still the same now?

Correct Richie, off the pier you are limited to one trap per person (limited room), however off the bulkheads there are no limitations. Your best bet though is spotting them then scooping them off the pilings with a long crab net - better at low tide :) . . .

Larry The bulk head is were I read the sign, I have never been on that pier,it does look nice.

Crabbing the red Bank and Fair Haven in early July was real slow 4 hours we had a dozen nice keepers.

Keyport has changed the rule on crab traps, it's now 4 traps per family!

I guess it depends how far down you consider Central NJ relative to where you live. The Barnegat bay has always been decent, there are a few piers to use or rent a skiff from one of the local places and get out to pole island or near the 37 Bridge.
