Question about using lures.

Lately I have been experimenting with a bunch of different lures. I am looking to make my life easier when it comes to switching lures. Can I just attach them directly to a swivel or should I use a leader of some sort? Any advice that will help so I don't have to keep retieing everytime I switch lures would be appreciated.

Re: Question about using lures.

It has a lot to do with what type of fish you are targeting. In salt water when fishing for stripers and albies, I always tie direct to the jig head/lure. When fresh water fishing, I mainly target pike and always use a quality snap swivel to make changing lures easy. Pike don't mind the hardware, but I am sure there are some fresh water fish that do. I am sure that some of the hard core fresh water guys here will give the best advice when it comes to different species. Good luck !!!!

Re: Question about using lures.

I use a snap connected to my leader for everything from panfish to walleye to big pike. Above my leader is a barrel swivel tied to my braid which helps prevent line twist and having to tie a uni to uni or similar line to line knot.

Re: Question about using lures.

I use a small snap only, no swivel when using lures with an eye or split ring.
I think def not as noticeable without the barrel unless using braid like Skunk said.
Makes switching lures alot easier and quicker.

Re: Question about using lures.

I almost never use a snap and swivel unless I'm fishing with lures that could cause line twist, like in-line spinners or spoons. When the bite is on I don't think it matters, but if the fish are sluggish or if the water is super-clear, I would ditch the hardware and tie directly to the lure.

Re: Question about using lures.

I direct tie all lures in FW. The only time I use a swivel is on a Carolina rigged worm/lizard. I now have to wear glasses to see what the F... I am doing!. It sucks getting older. The quick switch using a swivel is attractive, but I have been frustrated trying to close it in the past and prefer to do a quick re-tie.

Re: Question about using lures.

Thanks a lot guys! going to go ahead and use a snap for now. I am new to using lures and have been switching a lot so I can try different things each time out. Once I have figured them out I will probably go back to tying direct. Then when I get older I will go back to the snap as my eyesight fades! Thanks again!
