buying lures cheap
 

I have been buying a lot of fishing supplies from Dick's and Cabela's. I was wondering whether anyone has ordered from these guys. It looks like the same product but much much cheaper.

I do like to buy from smaller, local shops, but sometimes they just do not have what I need. I have found Cabela's and BPS to be helpful, because they can afford to carry more quantity and variety of items. However, I think that Cabela's has a slight edge, in that their 'generic' items are of higher quality than BPS's. I do not shop at Dick's due to their company policy regarding firearm purchases.

If you want to buy lures REALLY cheap you can buy brand-x lures in bulk straight from the contract manufacturers in China at Alibaba. Here is a link:

Local tackle stores tend to run on the expensive side for lures, and even though they usually have good regional stuff, they don't always have everything you need. Big box sporting goods stores like Dick's are competitively priced, and may have great clearance sales, but their selection is close to nonexistent. Stores like Cabela's and BPS have E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G, reasonably priced, but seldom on sale. What I usually do is go to both sites and see what they have on sale, and if it's a lure I normally use or I may want to try I buy it on sale whether I need it at the time or not. This way I have a stockpile ready when I need it. If I wind up with a whole lot of one type of lure, I give some away as birthday and Christmas gifts.

I go through quite a few in-line spinners. I just figured that it would be cheaper if I buy dozen at a time at $1 a piece than buying a few at $2-$4 a piece.

I bought a thousand leadhead jigs and twister tails for $90 from Hagen's in South Dakota.

Yea a deal is always great to find but You might also consider developing a relationship with a local "Mom & Pop" store. Do your research online. Take the prices you find to the local store and see if they can match it. If they can't match see how close they can come. If they are close enough it may be the difference of what you have to pay in shipping to buy online.

Consider teaming up with a couple friends and buying in bulk. This may also bring your local store price down? I just hate to see the local shops disappear. Try getting local info from Joe blow at the big ticket store. Sometimes the big store will actually put someone in a department that actually knows what they are talking about, but not all that often.

I do want to find a local mom & pop shop but I don't think there is one in north eastern Bergen county.

Closest "mom & pop" to you would be in the area of Route 23, Franks in Wanaque or Davis over the border in Sloatsburg.
