Knot question

Why on some knots with line wraps such as the San Diego Jam & others, as line strength increases, number of turns decrease? physical knot size? friction? line strength integrity? or what? Often wondered about this but never asked!!! On others, like the uni and blood knots, wraps remain constant.. Think I read somewhere a long time ago that too many turns on heavier line did indeed inhibit line strength, but can't remember!! Most knot line strength descriptions only go up to 40# with 3turns, what about 50-60# & rarely 80# test mono?

Thanks for any enlightenment...

Re: Knot question

I think there are two reasons. First, the reduced flexibility of the heavier line means that fewer turns are needed to prevent the tag end from pulling out; it just is less prone to slipping back around the tight turns. Second (and related), more turns with heavier line are harder to pull up into a well-formed knot.

I agree with Mike1010. He nailed it. There is a product called Reel Knot, ( I think thats it) that will lube the line to allow for a tighter, stronger knot. This can be also be achieved with other products that are cheaper, but I think its important for knots using heavier line.

Thanks Tom, it's something I've wondered about for a long time...I always wet every knot--it's nice to know there's a product out there also...plus I use a drop of crazy glue on my braid to mono and mono to fluoro knots...

Oh yea--can't wait to get the acid wrapped rod...
