Millington Gorge 12/8

My last two trips to the gorge were terrible at best, but I still decided to give it one last chance. Began fishing about 9am with a large white spinnerbait. After a few casts I hooked into an underwater tree:mad: . After cutting off the line I switched to a clown color husky jerk. I moved further upstream, and found a nice shallow cove. I began twitching the bait alongside a fallen down tree, and it produced a small but fighting chain pickerel. I tried a few more casts, but to no prevail and decided to call it a day.

Definitely the time of year for the husky jerk. Nice little slime dart.

Once the trout stocking ends in that stretch of the Passaic, there's only a few species left for which to fish. That's a good sized pickerel for there. I've caught smaller ones and also a few small red fin pickerel near the RR trestle.

Is this a section of the Passiac River?

I tried to kayak the Long Hill section of the Passiac this summer, but the river was too low and the kayak ground to a halt. I had to walk back to the car dragging the kayak behind me.

The Passiac River had to pass a few sewer treatment outflows before the water level was high enough to kayak.

Yeah. The river upstream from the gorge is deep enough to kayak, but getting a kayak to this section of the river will be tough. If you want to kayak try starting at lord stirling rd. Theres a big parking lot near the bridge and I always see people launch their kayaks from here.

Try to launch your yak near Bridge Ave. which is an extension of Snyder Ave. in Berkeley Heights. The river is deeper from there downstream. You might be able to get a pick up in Chatham or Summit. The state stocks the stretch in Chatham and a spot or two in Summit with trout early in the season. There are also some lmb and pickerel through some of those stretches. I'm not sure when the river gets deeper after that stretch around Gillette and Sterling but it certainly is deep enough once you get past there.
