Passaic River5/21- It's raining smallies

Hit my favorite stretch of the Passaic today to test my newest rod, a 6 ft 3 inch medium extra fast St. Croix Avid. The weather was horrible, with heavy rain, but the smallies had the feedbag on. I picked up 14 fish, and dropped 3 more. 2 came on a silver phoebe, 2 on a powerteam lures grub in green pumpkin. I was fishing the grub against the current weightless, and the fish were rising to take it from the top. But the biggest producer today was a 5 inch black/blue flake senko fished weightless texas style. They were absolutely crushing it as I drifted it through a fast run. Ten fish taken this way. No huge fish all 10- 14 inches.

The rod performed flawlessly. This is my first rod with an extra fast tip. I can feel every tick of the line. This is gonna be a great plastics rod.

I now have eight St Croix Rods, and am going to be purchasing more to replace other mfr's rods. Since I bought my first St. Croix, I haven't bought any other brands. The feel is second to none.

Which town were you in? Last week I fished a 1/2 mile stretch of the Passaic in Florham Park for three solid hours. All I had to show for my efforts was one baby pickerel. I fished half the time with a medium sized Rooster Tail and the other half with a medium jointed Rapala. I think the pike must be further down stream.

Good job hauling em in on a rough day. Sometimes constant action beats a lunker.

I also fish that area. Except for one 16" Smallie I landed last week, all the ones I've caught in the passed couple weeks have been in that 10"-14" range as well.

I'll take 10-14 inch bronzebacks over 20 inch largemouth bass eight days a week:D

I fished Lake Musconetcong Sat 5/19 with a buddy and the black/blue flake Stik-O's (BPS Senko knockoff) was the only thing they hit there as well. I've had that bag of black/blue for years and never had any luck on them until just these last two weeks. I've taken over 20 bass and 5 Pickeral in may last three trips on them. Texas Rigged with a 1/8th onunce bullet weight. Must be something about that color this year!:)

Nice job on the smallies.....love catching those guys.

There's a video on Youtube of a guy catching a Pike in Chatham and that's upstream from Floram Park. I spoke with the guy who posted the video and he's caught pike upstream from the Falls in Chatham so it seems the Pike are all over the river. Just have to find where they're lurking I guess. All I've caught in the Passaic is Smallies, Yellow Perch, and Crappies and Bluegill.
