Pequannock River 5/8

Decided to hit the Pequannock in Bloomingdale today in search of the elusive (for me anyway) rainbow trout. Saw trout rising all over the place. Tried 4 diff spinners and worms and couldnt hook up with one. Managed "less than dink" smallie, bullhead, and sunfish, 1 of each. Oh well, at least it wasn't a total loss.......

Oh, and upon checking the trout stocking schedule, it looks like they stocked the Pequannock today. Ouch..........

I work up the street from there. Except on opening day, I have seen very few people fising there this year, even on the days they stock. I'm actually very surprised.

I'm not surprised at all. I live in West Milford, and have fished the Pequannock in Bloomingdale for many years. In previous years, I was always able to catch a limit, (most released), on any particular day throughout the spring season. Despite what the published stocking numbers say, I'm pretty convinced the actual numbers of stocked fish is way down from previous years. I've talked to many others on the river and they all seem to agree. I stop there almost every day, and the fish I have caught have been very few.

So if there are less fish being stocked, what do you think happens to the rest? The hatchery truck stops at the house of one of the DFW workers and they smoke them or something? Or maybe they load them up and take them away in black helicopters?
