My 4 year old grandson wanted to go fishing on Sunday but with the heat I thought it would be best just to try the lagoon in my backyard this way if it got to hot we could just go inside. So I rigged up his Spiderman rod with a bobber and a 1/0-and put a small killie on. Honestly was not expecting anything. Casted out and almost immediately the bobber started moving. I thought it was just the killie pulling the bobber but when a killie came back with just it's head and then on the next cast 1/2 a killie came back, I immediately knew there had to be snappers around. So I ran to the bait shop, bought a pack of spearing and some snapper hooks. Long story short, he ended up catching 2 (setting the hook & reeling them in unassisted).

I caught 3 later that evening and another 6 in 30 minutes fishing this morning.

Sized ranged from 4-6 inches.

Not sure if they're in Raritan Bay or the Shrewsbury/Navesink but they are definitely in my lagoon system in Brick.

They're a lot of fun and easy to catch, even with a Snoopy pole :D Fun on castmasters too...

That size makes amazing large fluke bait. Even if you freeze them, thaw them out, and hook them up the right way on a 2 hook rig to prevent spinning. Put your grandson to work and thank him by taking him out for the fluke.

Too bad you can only keep 3 per person. :(

I cut my teeth catching snappers and tinker macks off the docks in montauk. My godfather and dad would be licking their chops as they were prepping for offshore tuna trips... little did I realize I was stocking them up with fresh baits!

I have a small potable live well and next time I go fluking I plan on getting my 3 bluefish/snapper limit and using them for bait. I'm not big on freezing them.
