Windowpane flounder
 

Caught, tagged and released my first windowpane flounder for this year at Manasquan, NJ, this afternoon. Also caught 2 fluke, 4 hickory shad and a surfer. 15 fish in 2 trips with my new homemade rig was great.

I used to love catching good size Windowpane.. Years ago we called them "sundials".. We caught them in fair numbers in cooler water than Fluke liked, and I dunno, maybe slightly warmer than Winter Flounder liked, if that makes any sense.. I do recall that although they were really thin, I liked eating them a lot more than Fluke.. They were as good as any Winter Flounder.. I could be wrong, but I think we saw them a lot more commonly years ago than fishermen do these days....

They are still called sundials by most..... Yes, they are a tasty fish to eat.

He was an Earnest Hemingway lookalike who paddled into my line. After he removed my braided line from his face, he continued paddling in the swift rip current alongside the jetty but my line was still attached to his surf board. I followed him by walking on the rocks out towards the end of the jetty until he escaped. I was fortunate to get my rig back. There are way too many surfers at Manasquan. I counted as many as 60 of them. They take most of the parking spots.

You’re right. I only caught one this year. There is no limit and I think that fishermen caught, killed and ate most of them.

Unfortunate byproduct of commercial dragging. Discarded or sold cheaply and renamed something more consumer appealing. They used to be thick... and not very long ago. They should still be thick with the volume of bait in and around our inlets.

A few years ago when there was a lot of bait at the inlet I saw sundials, skates and fluke chasing bait right in front of me. This year I only saw hickory shad chase bait. Didn’t see a striped bass at Manasquan Inlet this year yet.
