Striper question from retired guys
Our group of 4 retired guys are going on a party boat next Tuesday for stripers. As none of us have a lot of experience with stripers, here are a couple of questions that perhaps a few of you could help us with: 1: Are spinning rods a good choice to bring? 2: If so, are 4000 class reels large enough? 3: Any suggestions on bait, lures, line, etc. are welcomed. Any guidance that you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Striper question from retired guys
Yes & Yes. Last two trips in October I have used a 7ft MHF spinner w/ 4000 series stradic and a treble hook bunker snag.
I switched the bunker over to a 7Ft conventional with an Avet SX and a circle hook on a bait finder rig. Did well but we were on a sponsors 6-pack. Others of our group used similar set-ups. Some of the party boat sharpies may have better advice. We also tossed swim shads and flutter spoons w/ the spin equipment. I got one 33" on a spoon which I used with a 7' MHF and a 5000 Penn. We did better with the live bunker and released multiple overs on one trip. Second trip we had a six man limit. Your results may vary as I'm sure others have done better, some worse. Stay safe & Tight lines. |

Call the Capt and ask for advice. Most are happy to make tackle recommendations.

Re: Striper question from retired guys
Spinning rods are perfect and as Tom suggested best lures would be butterfly spoons and swim shads. You might also want to bring a popper if they are up top.
If you want to fish live Bunker you’ll need to bring a bunker snag for one rod and another rod with a circle hook since you can no longer snag Bunkers and fish with treble hook snags. Looks like you guys hit it just right so best of luck. |
