Grass shrimp!
It seems like Fluke feed a lot on grass shrimp early in the season and I'm sure other species do also. I have found using smaller bait this time of year works best. Anyone else would like to chime in on this please do! Tight Lines!

Re: Grass shrimp!
A 30” striper we kept was loaded with what looked like mantis shrimp… still caught it on a big flutter spoon… they’re basically eating machines, i don’t think they’re that picky most of the time haha

Re: Grass shrimp!
Years ago we would chum and use grass shrimp for bait to target weakfish. It wasn’t unusual to pickup fluke while doing so. Also used pink finesse on light jigheads along with grass shrimp....

Re: Grass shrimp!
Not a popular technique in Raritan Bay but in Barnegat Bay chumming with grass shrimp has always been a great light tackle technique for both weakfish & fluke.
Also use this technique on the ocean side side of the north jetty of Barnegat Inlet for schoolie (& occasional small sized keepers) stripers and blackfish. I’ve found many mantis shrimp upon cleaning both fluke & stripers caught in Raritan Bay. |

Re: Grass shrimp!
When searching the flats looking for fluke, focus on finding small clouds of grass shrimp. Drop and reel. Rarely are there not fluke under them.
