Blackfish. Wrecks or Rocks?
 

What is your experience? We typically fish rockpiles for them. I see some South Jersey guys slaying big whitechins solely on wrecks. What's your take/experience? Thanks!

I have always felt wrecks that don't get hammered relentlessly all year and "get some rest" harbor bigger fish, but rocky areas are much larger and more spread out habitats that offer better numbers, but a lot more small fish and bergalls.. Good luck finding many wrecks these days that aren't well known and heavily fished however......bob

Beware all captains call their trips “wreck fishing” trips. Most captains are not fishing wrecks. Most of them are fishing rocks and hard bottom areas at least the ones I see in the area that I fish. Most inshore wrecks are blown apart and so silted over that there isn’t very much relief at all to them and all these black fishing trips are inshore trips for the most part. Just because they captain says in a report that they were fishing a wreck does not mean it’s actually a wreck.

South Jersey has almost no natural rock formations inshore, which is why we are fishing wrecks all the time. Nice thing about wreck fishing is it's usually an oasis surrounded by sandy desert, so the fish are concentrated and it's easier to dial in an area on the wreck with a good bite.

All good points.. Problem is that with modern electronics too many boats are fishing the same wrecks, and a 1/2 acre wreck zone is a lot easier to clean out than a 250 acre rocky bottom area...
