How big do bass get in NJ? Here’s what they look like in LA.

Hi,

I’ve been posting in the salt water forum, but recently have been fishing a bit in FW. I live in Maine and found some ok ponds to hit up. I have a YT buddy down in Louisiana that catches some nice large mouth, bigger than what we get up here, just curious how big they get in NJ?

State record is 10 lbs 14 oz. Probably a few bigger ones around.

I caught my 9 lb 10 oz bass about 15 years ago. A couple of days later i had one up to the boat much larger but it spit the hook at boatside. My 9.5 lb was 28 inches long. Weighed in at Effingers sporting goods. My wife caught a 7.5 pounder a couple of weeks before. I don't know how the bass fishing is at Round Valley anymore. The first thing the state did was kill all the weed in the lake. and now there is not much water left in the lake.

Im really shocked at how strong the fishery is in NJ, I really appreciate you sharing this with me. As a kid my Nana had a place in mystic island, and we’d pretty much just catch digfish, and never hit the freshwater. Thank you all very much.

Most mature largemouth bass in NJ range between 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 pounds , anything bigger is a real trophy . Ive been fishing in NJ since the late 60's with an eye on the state record , I've caught scores of bass in the 5 to 6 range , my PB is a little over 8 .

I've caught two around 5 here. One at Turnmill lake on a 4" plastic worm and the other at Colonial lake before the drawdown fishing for trout with powerbait.
These are Northern Bass not the Florida strain down South or out West. In California they have hybrid Florida/ Northern Bass that can push 18 lbs. I have seen some of these brutes push stocked Rainbows on the shore gorging on them at San Vicente lake in San Diego. They would fish 10-12" swimbaits for them. My pb was around 8 lbs. On a crawdad at Southerland Lake in San Diego.
