Fluke Discard Video

When this video was posted back in 2014 on another site, it generated well over one hundred comments. There are two sides to every story and in the case of commercial and recreational fluke quotas, both sides are regulated by the same government agencies. Both parties have quotas imposed on them and neither system is perfect or near logical. The commercial draggers have concerns of their own and believe it or not, many of their concerns are related to the wasteful regulations that are imposed on them.

This " us against them " campaign is counter productive. It pits both sides as adversaries instead of cohorts. Both sides have turned on each other instead of working together. Regulations are part of the management tools but there are loopholes in both sets of rules. In the case of the commercials, their daily total poundage is set. What if they overfish their daily quota? They can't bring the overage back to the co-op for fear of being fined. What would you do?

Give them a seasonal limit and be done with it. Once they are limited out, they move on to another species. They might be done with their limits in a few weeks. At least the commercial catch can be monitored. The rec's can't be.

There obviously are flaws in the system for both the rec's and the commercials. It seems that the feds can't or won't see it that way.
