Tsumani Rod Breakage
 

Anyone know about Tsunami Rods? Had a 9' 2 piece rod break today on the upper section while surf casting. Wife won it at a tricky tray and can't find any info online about and actual company? any help appreciated

Bimini Bay outfitters 43 McKee dr Mahwah nj 07430. From what I have heard they break due to fatigue caused by impact usually mis handling while shipping.

I had one break too. It could have been my fault but still, it left a bad taste in my mouth. I won't buy another one.

I have owned several Tsunami rods from light plugging rods to party boat fluke rods to heavy duty 11' bait chuckers. I've never experienced any type of problem with any of them and it's been my experience that these are quality rods at affordable prices.

try tackle direct .or brellie tackle. i own a few never a problem don't like two-piece always seems weaker to me. good luck.

It's always frustrating and disappointing to break a rod. Some can be fixed. Some can be replaced. I'd like to know the back story behind your broken rod. How it broke, what part of the rod broke etc. are all parts of the story. Rods don't break themselves. They need help. A simple ding from hitting it against a rock or hard object can lead to problems later. Storage and transportation can also be sources for disaster. A rod bouncing around in a car or banging on the side of a boat or car are all things to avoid.

Look at it this way......your wife must love you very much to have taken a chance on a rod and then to have won the rod and given it to you. It didn't cost you a thing. If you had bought it at a reputable store, you might have been able to take it there and plead your case. They might have dealt with their supplier to get you a new rod.

The Bimini Bay people are great. They stand by their products and design many of their products including their rods and reels. They don't have to replace your rod, if that is what you are looking for. There are no replacement tops for any rods by the way. You are ahead of the game because the rod cost you nothing. You can try for a replacement, but you might just have to buy a new one. Fortunately, the fall run hasn't begun so you can have time to get a replacement rod.

You would be surprised at what abuse some fishermen do to their rods. Some are unimaginable, yet, fishermen still try to get the company to replace their rods for free. Using a railing on a boat as a lever and a brace to help reel in a fish or break off a snag is one of the big abuses. The rod companies get requests for replacements all of the time. They get many, many stories of woe. How do they decide who gets and who doesn't?

Sorry to hear about your rod, but as you know, things happen. It's just too bad it happened to you.

Thanks for the reply. Let me first clarify, It was bid on to be won, not free and bid was right around market value(charity event).

The rod was approx 2 seasons old, lightly used for surf fishing maybe a dozen times tops. Rod was 2 pieces and literally snapped in half during a cast approx 4 inches above the connection point. I've never had a rod break like that in my life , I'm 53. I've been in contact with it seems like the right people, unfortunately its not an actively produced rod, they are going to check to see if they have a replacement, we''ll see and advise.

I wasn't sure how a tricky tray event works but I have a better idea now. Still, I'm sure your wife could have bid on a different item but she chose a rod for you. She sounds like a "keeper". Don't mess it up. As for the rod.......that's all it is.

Two piece rods are susceptible to damage at or near the ferrule. Unless securely fastened, the male end can press against the top section where the two meet. As the rod loads up on the cast, the top section flexes while the ferrule on the bottom piece does not. It's like bending a stick against your knee. Something has to give. It is usually the thing that flexes when it pushes against a pressure point that goes.

While two piece rods are convenient for travel and storage, one piece rods are often more preferred because the action is more parabolic throughout the entire length. A 9' or 10'' factory-made rod is usually not too common because the general public has a hard time with getting it into a car, but the fishermen who fish often, will opt for a one-piece rod most of the time.

Good luck with getting a replacement, or maybe your wife will get rewarded again at a fund raising event.

Most of the Tsunami 2 piece rods that are over 9 foot have a 70 - 30 ferrule. The breakage issues have mostly been in the upper 1/3 of the rod. They are nice rods with quality components for the price. I have a 9ft 6 airwave and it performs well. I bought it directly to avoid it getting beat up being shipped. So far no issues and the lower ferrule placement is strong and performs almost as well as a one piece rod.
