Fly fishing the beaches?
 

Hello everyone, I reside in Tampa, FL and I am visiting the Newark area and was wondering if it were even possible to fly fish the beaches for some saltwater species. I travel to Newark several times a year. My initial research leads me to think I can target blues and stripers but I'm not really sure whats running right now. I have packed the 12wt, 10wt and I have some decent sized Deep Clouser's and a few poppers. Pretty sure i can launch the Clousers farther though. I've been fishing the trout rivers but would really like to put a bend on the larger gear. Any help in my quest would be greatly appreciated.
PS. If anyone needs info on fishing the flats on the Gulf of Mexico side, I'd be happy to help out. Even guide if you'll be near the Tampa area.

Fly fishing the beaches (and rivers and bays) for stripers and blues up here is absolutely a good idea. Lots of guys do it. Success is hit or miss (sometimes the fish aren’t where you thought they’d be) but it works often enough. As long as you’ve got some streamers a few inches long that you can fling on your 10WT you’re in business. Have some kind of wire leaders to use in case you find blues. There’s more info out there than we’d want to cover here, but by all means bring tackle and give it a go.

Thank you Kevin. I was looking to fish the Sandy Hook area as it is fairly close to Newark. Do you know if there will be any issues fishing the beaches there? I know in FL, it is frowned upon (sometimes illegal) to fish some of the beaches.
Just want to go about it the right way. Thank you.

Just try to fish away from the swimmers..the fishing beach @Sandy Hook is usually a good place to start. lotsa room for walking north(left of the entrance) toward/up to Gunnison beach(nude beach) which I usually keep outa of. Good luck fishing, Rammie

People fishing behind Jersey Gardens mall in Elizabeth catch striped bass off the banks, that's just the other side of the runway at Newark airport, just have to find access.

Fish early mornings pre dawn 5 am to just after 7-730
Wind will be the least.
9 or 10 is more than adequate or even a 8
Prefer a intermediate line over float in the surf because of the waves
Dropping tides will reveal structure holes and sloughs n the bars.
Closures and deceivers good searching patterns
Have some heavy mono 60# or wire bite leader there are bluefish around
The entrance of Sandy Hook down through Sea Bright is a good stretch to explore if not familiar with the area.
You'll see some of the regulars there who'll be more than happy to share advice and info
