More Trout

I was able to get out on the river on Monday and had fun catching a bunch more of the stockie rainbows. Landed 7 on a combination of nymphs, wet flies and dry flies and lost a bunch more. I crush down the barbs on all my flies since I am releasing everything I catch. I know a lot of people have said this but this year's stocked rainbows are by far the best I have ever seen. They look great and fight hard!

Here a few photos for you trout porn addicts!

Nice report. Cool pic of that fish in the water. They really are nice looking little fish this year.

What were the hot flies?

I find that by crushing down the barbs I actually get better hook sets, especially with size 14 and above hooks plus it makes the release easier.

I got out Monday as well. Tried sulfur and hare's ear wet flies but only could move wild fish (i.e. creek chubs) on them. Switched to a brown bugger and I couldn't keep the rainbows off of it. I brought 9 to hand and lost 2 or 3 more. All cookie cutter like the ones in your photo's but fun none the less.

Best part was I had 100 yards of popular stream to my lonesome. I saw one other guy and he was going further downstream to spin fish a big deep pool.

Most of what I caught were on bead head flashback pheasant tail nymph. Also managed a few on parachute adams dry. I noticed what at first I thought were trout taking something off the surface but as I watched I realized there were feeding just under the surface film. I put on a caddis emerger (no weight, no indicator) and fished like a wet fly swing and hooked into a few more.

I didn't see anyone else fishing the entire time I was there.

If the fish are off to a healthy start that could bode well for more hold-overs, only time will tell. Great report, nice trout !

This rain should keep the river levels up and cool. Haven't been like this in a few years.
