Question About Fishing Midges
 

Im relatively new at fly fishing and especially fishing midges. Today I hit the river with a few size 20 midges tied on 5x tipper. I was fishing this using a strike indicator. My question is does one normally use a split shot when fishing midges? Do you use a single or tandem fly setup? I would appreciate any tips you can share.

I had the same question before, looked online, and saw a split shots are normally necessary unless the midge has some added weight of itself. You want that thing to sink especially in this cold season.

Midgets can fish just like everybody else. They just can't cast as far because their arms are shorter and they're closer to the water.

I use a tandem set up. I generally lead with a larger nymph like a bead head prince or Hare's ear. I follow that with a smaller midge(size 18-22) about 12-18 inches behind the first fly. Fishing this time of year can be tough, drag free drifts are a must. Try not to leave a lot of fly line on the water if any at all. If you can, fish without the indicator. You will totally be in touch with the drift of your nymphs this way. Hope this helps...good luck.
