Truck bed rod rack....

Fabricating my own. Will be mounted behind the cab. Unsure what angle to place the rods at? 30* or 45*?

Anyone have either a self made or custom rack they can fill me in on what angle they are at. Thanks

Go with the 30 - straight up and you have to watch the trees limbs.

Straight up would definitely not work. With a lift kit on the truck, a 7 foot rod would have a 12 foot clearance.

Thanks Dano, mocked up a few tubes at 30* and they sit just right.

Duff,

Before you roll your own, take a look at this one, PortaRod. I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but probably will so. I hate the idea of drilling holes in my truck bed.

Cool concept.

I have no plans of drilling holes in the bed. I have a factory bed rail system and have been toying with brackets to utilize that. Want the rack to sit low enough that bed cover will fit when rods aren't in the rack.

Mocked up these brackets with a 4" drop. Not sure if I'll powder coat the steel or redo them in aluminum. Trying to keep everything black in color. Thinking of making a wood crossbar and having it rhino lined to match the bed.

If you want to spray them, this stuff is amazing.

Used it on our aluminum cabin door frame on the boat and my trailer hitch on the truck and its really tough stuff. I've seen others use it on the black metal window frames on boats and it works well there too in spite of all the elements and salt water.

I have 2 of the porta rods in my truck.
They are OK, but I would never purchase them again.
spacing sucks due to them using a universal cargo bar.
I put them in opposite so I could use the spacing all the way across the truck.
you need t just about bend the truck bed liner to get them tight enough to hold the rods without slipping

Good info. Still working on a design. Costs nothing but my time. Will be playing with it for awhile to see what I come up with.
