OUPV Medical Certification

I completed all required coursework, sea hours and ancillary certifications for my OUPV last March and now I am on round three with USCG regarding a mitral valve repair in 2015. I have been under Cardio care since and am 6’ 195 lbs with an adjusted BMI of 24. I get an EKG every six month, go to the gym 4 days a week and competed in a Mini-Ironman in Kauai last June. They have made the completion of my OUPV application almost impossible for me through endless requests for additional information. I am on no cardio medication or restrictions. I enjoyed my Captains Class and found the new knowledge very valuable when at the helm. I am more confident offshore and when navigating inshore tafffic. I would have, however, had a better understanding of the difficulty of getting the medical cert through legitimate channels prior to taking the course. I’ve spoken with other captains who told me that there are doctors who specialize in “navigating” you through the beauracracy, however, I’m not sure I’d want to take that risk. Any similar experience or remedies out there?

Hello,

Like Fishhead728 said. You should go to Land Sea and Air. There is nothing shady about knowing how to "navigate" the system through proper channels and using the services of a professional who can help you through the process.

I have used him myself and recommended him to countless others..

Not saying he can pull a rabbit out of the hat or bend the rules, but being a former Coastie himself, he knows which end is up, how they operate and can get you on the right track.

Do yourself a favor and contact Mark http://www.cglicense.com/

Re: OUPV Medical Certification

We lost two long-term sea tow captains due to old medical issues. They would not re-new them. Was not a new application...

Ever since that A-hole fell asleep and crashed the Staten Island ferry it's been a nightmare Gerry.

It's a crap shoot. And you don't know until it's reviewed. And that MMC credential review is AFTER everything is done and submitted. I also believe the application medical review is done in MD not locally - or it was done down there,

Re: OUPV Medical Certification

I finally received notice that my medical cert has been issued. A 100% on my CPAP use a clean cardio clearance did the trick. Now I’m just waiting for mariner credential. I had to send them evidence of my ownership of my past boat used for some of my sea service. They’re reviewing it now. Next I’m going to do something easier and get an audience with the Pope.
