brought up using mono line also. started tooling around with braid about 2 years ago. Me personally i like Spiderwire the best. I did notice that when using braid for jigging my line tended to get tangled up pretty often. I dont know if my leader line was to long or if leader line was floating to much or what but man is getting tangles out of braid a pain.

If you are mainly bottom fishing deep water, you will have much greater feel and sensitivity with any major brand of braid. I have fished over 15 different types of braid and really enjoy most of them. I would just pick basic 4 strand high visibility braid and spool up. Basic Power Pro or Daiwa J Braid 4 Strand, etc would be fine. You will have better abrasion resistance with a 4 strand braid than an 8 strand. Also, a yellow or red or blue braid will just be easier to see and untangle when the time comes, just always use a mono or fluoro leader.

I've been fishing many years, but always try new things when they become available. Tried out circle hooks way back and never stopped, especially for Stripers. Tried power pro when it first came out, and never stopped. I have it on all but a couple of my rods.
Couple of things are important in my mind about braid. Never, NEVER wrap it around your hand if it gets snagged on the bottom. It will cut you to the bone. I alway put a top shot of mono for at least the length of the rod, so when it does get snagged, the mono will break out first, anf =d you don't have to cut it at the reel, saving much expensive braid. When snagged, two wraps around the reel, and a straight pull bas will do the trick, if you can't drive up on the line, and try to pull it out at 180 degrees to the snag.
For trolling, I like to use the florescent colors orange, yellow green, as they are easy to spot, and you can see if they get crossed up.
I have tried the Chinese made dyeema braid, and find it to be good ( so far ). I also use specific colors if going to different pound tests. For example Orange is 20#, pink is 10# on ultralight, moss green id 50# and all other colors on 30#. Give it a shot. It is super sensitive............Papa

I gave KastKing a try a couple years back and found it to be a great deal. Much cheaper than the "name" brands and IMHO, as good. I would put it on my tuna reels, but everything else is loaded with the stuff.

Personally, I like Suffix, Spiderwire, Powerpro, and Fins. I think they're all good, I'll buy whichever I get the best deal on at the time.

Good enough for bottom fishing and 1/2 the cost of PP. 200 foot of water with braid and you can feel a ling nibbling. If you use 40lb braid for example use a little 30lb mono for a shocker so if you get stuck that breaks instead of the braid.

I just started using J-braid 8 strand last year. I use it for everything and never had a problem. The price is pretty good also. For bottom fishing I use a 8' - 10' mono leader 30# tied to 30# braid. For fluking I am using 15# braid with a 20# fluoro leader. Hope this helps you out.

30lb and under I stick with Sufix 832. 40lb+ I go with Power Pro Slick 8.
For the fishing you're gonna be doing, setup your "wreck fishing" setup with 40lb braid of choice and you'll be fine. For ling and seabass you don't need too much of a top shot (I don't use one). But for tog I use 15-20ft.

I think all of the braids are pretty equal since they're all made from the same plastic fibers, especially when you get into the higher tests like 20 to 50 lb. For depths up to 200', i wouldn't go above 30lb. The stuff is incredibly hard to break off at that test and higher is even harder. One of the best parts about braid is that it lasts multiple seasons, if you're a guy who fishes once or twice a week. You'll notice after a while that the tag end will become worn, so here's what i do at the end of every season. I remove all of the braid by winding it on to another reel. Then I wind it on to a third reel and then wind it back onto the original reel. You now have fresh line on your reel. It's a little bit of work, but braid is too expensive to discard after only one season like mono.

They are similar, but completely different. Regular PP in the higher line class is like rope. The slick 8 stuff in the lower class 10-30 is super waxy and hard to get regular knots to hold with. Sufix in the higher class 40-50+ is a little on the thicker side as well. And I know of certain brands that are notorious for random snapping, fraying, etc.

Wreck fishing I would recommend spiderwire or powerpro. Daiwa boat braid for pelagics IMO is the best but not great around sharp wrecks. Spiderwire tends to put up with the abrasion very well.
