Short Notice M-N-G! INVASIVE CATS 8/7???

WHERE- Far west NJ somewhere down rt 78 on the BIG D!

WHEN- This Sunday, August 7th from 5pm til who knows!

WHAT- INVASIVE FLATHEAD CATS!!!

Well it's been a while and I'm sorry for the short notice! Just want to see if anyone would be interested in a SUNDAY FUNDAY on the BIG D! Please let me know if your interested via PM, phone call or text! If one NJF angler shows up I'll be thrilled, LOL!!!

Requirements- Beefy rods, beefy leader material, 5/0-8/0 RIVER MONSTER HOOKS, something on your feet you don't mind getting wet, live baits such as Blue Gills and other tasty river morsels!

There are some rather large fish around these days that swam up with the recent rains! Let's see if we can whack a few! Look forward to seeing at least one MANIAC out there, HAHA!!!:)

TIGHT LINEZ!!!:D

DO you even have to ask?

Since it is a short notice I gonna have Alex the line crossing lunatic to tag alone so you can spend some time untangling while I get da fish.

Things that make me go hmmmm... I'm very interested. What size reel do you recommend? 4000? 5000?

I have 1 3500 baitrunner reel spooled with 30lb PP! The other reel is spooled up with 40lb PP and I believe it's a Shimano Saros 4000. Never had any issues on my Flathead/Channel catfish excursions with these reels! I'll be headed out early to catch all my bait! Hope to someone out there, LOL! Send me a PM if there's any questions! If you have my number feel free to call or text!

It's funny I read this right now. I'm am totally an over-the-top, heavy gear guy, and I've often wondered how big a reel on actually needs. We landed a 7-foot, 100+ pound blacktip yesterday on a 4500 Penn Slammer III with 30 pound braid and a 25-pound fluoro leader. Fish actually hit a lure and bit it just right. Or it may have eaten a skipjack that ate the lure. My point is, you're probably good with a 4000, 3000, or even a 2000.

It's not the fish dive so much as the surrounding structure. I snapped 30lbs braid like sewing tread the other night when a big cat hit near rocks. I'll be upping to 80lbs. Not worth losing a huge fish!

Braid has minimal abrasion resistance whether it's 30-lb. or 80-lb. A 3-foot plus section of 20-lb. mono or fluoro leader, or better yet, a 6 to 10-foot 20 to 30-lb. shock leader attached with an FG knot will take care of those issues. There is no reason a 40lb. catfish cannot be caught on 20-lb. braid with the right leader.

I have work that day at night, otherwise I'd go. Haven't been there since last year!
Just went to the Schuylkill River a day ago in hopes of a 30 pound catfish but returned with nothing..
Will be giving the Delaware a shot next week I hope and then I'll be going back to the Schuylkill R. for revenge! (problem was, the planned spot we were going to fish was already occupied).

30lb flathead goal will be beaten this year!
I wish you luck on this trip Eddie!

Count me in!! What rods you using? I have a couple ugly stick noodle rods I use for salmon. And I also have a couple ocean rods rated 1-4 oz. Never really targeted big cats so not sure what you guys use.

Yes exactly! Line capacity is the most important thing here. The cats run for 100 yards sometimes before swallowing the bait! Gotta have something a little on the heavy side to launch he big baits to where they live! Some guys use 3 inch gills! I use 5-8 inch Gills and Rockies! I watched a couple YouTube vids from Pa where the anglers were using stand up Tuna gear!!! WTF? Now that's what I call overkill! The 25+ lber I caught in March on a swim shad was landed on my St Croix Legend elite Walleye rod with 8 lb Fluoro! Haha! That was sketchyyyyyy!!! I'm fishing jagged rocks and boulders, not a sandy soft bottom!

Noodle rods are what I usually use! Just have to make sure the rod tip is strong enough to handle a 1-2 Oz egg sinker and the weight of the bait!

Absolutely no reason to go light unless you want to temp fate and lose a trophy. You're not casting light lures far, you don't need sensitivity, you're not working a lure. Go heavy! You have been warned!

I like the angler interest on such short notice! Friggin awesome! Guys that are definitely going! Send me a PM with your phone numbers so I can give you the location! If you already have my number send me a text! Don't forget to get out and catch some bait before the trip! 5 gallon bucket, aerator, Gills, Rockies, Chubbs, Fallfish, Suckers and Eels are all river candy this time of year! This should be a good time! Let's see if we can catch something! If you want to play with the little Channel cats you can bring some disgusting chicken livers! I say let's swing for the fences!

P.S. Don't forget bug spray if your one of those dudes that gets eaten alive! Sneakers or water shoes are a must! Flashlights and headlamps! 3/4-2 ounce egg sinkers, 5/0-8/0 River Monster hooks, good leader material...........

See you fellas soon!!!:D

Can't make it since I have concert tickets tomorrow night.

But I figured I would add some advice. You abesoultly can catch flatheads on light gear, happens all the time with bass and walleye anglers hook up on the flatheads. But to do it consistently especially when fishing from the bank you need to beef up the gear. All my set ups have 65-80lb braid with 50lb shock leaders and still have had cats break me off. You gotta remember these flatheads live in structure. Log jams and Boulder fields especially with cavities that they can get under is where they live. Guess where they head after the eat a bait? That's right right back Into the nastiest stuff they can find. Don't under estimate the power of these fish. I prefer 8/0 circle hooks and 3oz no roll weights.

I absolutely hate when you launch a bait out there and they take it, start swimming right back at you and hide with the bait under a jagged rock! Haven't been snapped off yet but did have some close calls! They're smart invasive bastards for sure! The paddle tail they have helps them move quickly, not like an channels forked tail! Very fast fish that can run 100's of yards without swallowing the bait! Good stuff Lou!!!!:)

Good luck to everyone joining FE tonight! From the sounds of it the flat heads are going to have a feast to choose from. Eddie you're a good man for making the offer to everyone on the site. Good spots are hard to come by and harder to find, sharing that information is a generous gesture and representative of the kind of guy you are. I hope everyone appreciates your gesture as you don't often see things like that happen in our beloved sport. Looking forward to the reports from the rock, hope to see many smiling faces, personal bests and pictures of nice flat heads. For those joining Eddie, welcome to the cult! Your life will never be the same! Before you know it you'll be doing the same voodoo dance Chrisper did! Good luck guys, give em' hell, looks like you have a great night weather wise. I posted the attached pictures in the salt water forum but just wanted to get guys fishing tonight's adrenaline going to catch the big one. My son got caught this yesterday while we were fishing in a fluke tournament. Black drum, fought like a monster flat head. A few pictures and successfully released for someone else to experience a surprise of a lifetime! Hope someone gets one this big tonight! Good luck guys.....look forward to the reports.

Hmmmmm...10AM and still no report?????? I am envisioning a pile of NJfishing.com'rs regaining consciousness among 100's of empty beer cans on the banks of the Big D and a raccoon running away with the left over dead sunfish in Eddie's bait bucket :eek::eek::eek::D:D:D

Hahaa fun time last night. I got 2, Eddie got 2, and bigboy got 3. And jigman got a decent sized channel cat. Many run offs and missed hook set. I'll post some pictures later. All the fish were in the 5-8lb range. No big ones on this trip but a fun time all around.
