On the RIVER........

Still playing on the rivers this week here and there. The cookie cutter Flatheads are starting to get out of hand. 5-8 lbers seem to be in control right now. Theres also a phenom amount of schoolie Stripers out there as well. Must have caught 30-40, 5-10 inch Stripers while trying to fish for Eels, UNREAL! The Smallie population is very strong these days on the big river. Everywhere I look theres Smallies. Got a few last night on assorted topwaters.

See this 12 inch Smallie! It inhaled a 5 inch Bluegill and tried to commit suicide. She swam off ok but was bleeding really bad. SUICIDE SMALLIE!!!http://i1315.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9k6vxh8l.jpg

Awesome report - as always.
I'm astounded at not only the numbers of Flatheads you catch, but the fact that you're also catching them in the daytime.

I have never caught a Flathead, but it's on my list.

Don't feel too bad about the bleeder. If you stick hooks in enough fish, you're occasionally going to release a fish that will exsanguinate and die. It just happens.

The river man! Nice work dude! The kitties have certainly been cooperating lately. Great to hear about all the little stripers.

Eddie,

What size were the two flat heads you posted pics of? Just a matter of time before the big girl comes calling. Lot of guys would kill to catch a 5-8 lb flat head!

Dakota

Man I've been following Eddie for two years stalking him from the woods watching his every move. I'll get one of those flatheads at some point!

Dakota, hey buddy! The 2 I posted were 7-8 lbers around 26 inches! They're all over the river! Buddy of mine got a 41 incher a hair south of rt 80 2 weeks ago! Moving up, wayyyyyy up! They fight like crazy!

Awesome man, a 41" fish is gonna be right around 30-32lbs. Only a matter of time before we start seeing those more often

Re: On the RIVER........

Eddie 26" is still a nice fish! And yes they are great fighters. Head shakes on the bigger fish are insane coupled with bull dog runs. Delaware that would have been my guess in weight as well, somewhere in the 30 - 35 lb range. If a female I assume the difference in pre-spawn vs post-spawn could be significant. Eddie the river around the Gap has some great areas for flatheads. I've heard of big fish being taken at the bend just down river of the 80 bridge and the river in Columbia and Belvidere has some great structure for them. With the amount of fish in the system, their voracious appetites and the ability to reproduce, their numbers should grow exponentially. No reason to think their push upriver is going to stop anytime soon. All good stuff for those who like fishing the midnight hours!
