Re: fish poison or black widow
I'm not going to knock the black widow (as I don't own one), but I can vouch for the incredible quality and value you will get from Kevin Bogan. You should treat yourself to one of his rods - he has outfitted Mushin Sportfishing for years - everything from light saltwater spinning rods to our 130 bent butts for giants. I have always been impressed with his matter-of-fact, no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is approach. He won't steer you wrong.

Re: fish poison or black widow
I don't know anything about the Black Widow rod, but I can tell you that my new Fish Poison Blackfish rod is essentially perfect in every way. Kevin was a pleasure to deal with as well. I am DEFINITELY going to be purchasing another of his rods.

Re: fish poison or black widow
I have both well more then both. I have the 200C and 3 Fish poison's 2 custom and one just his general one he makes. For deep drops and heavy oz days i like the fish poison rods. Like when you are using 12oz and up. For anything from 10oz down my go to is the Jigging world 200C. IMO with the lighter weight i get a better feel and hook set with the 200c. Plus the rod is just about impossible to break. If i had to choose one rod between them all I have to say id go with the Jigging World 200c.

Re: fish poison or black widow
I have many Fish Poison Rods and found it's hard to beat the Value you get for the price....:)

Re: fish poison or black widow
Instead of the BW, you might want to consider the new Shogun rod, it was designed for exactly what you're looking to do... Its my goto fluke/seabass/porgy rod. The BW 200 is my goto blackfish and offshore seabass/cod rod. The action in comparison to the weight of the rod is hard to beat, goes for all the JW rods.

Re: fish poison or black widow
If you're ever in the Northern NJ area, your best bet is to stop by the store in Rochelle Park and see all the rods in person. The shogun is only available as a blank right now, but there are some customs premade on the rack to check out.

Re: fish poison or black widow
What gear ratio on the 300?
|
Re: fish poison or black widow
The P is 5.1, H is 6.3 (to me its the sweet spot) and the HS/HS-P is 7.1
|
Re: fish poison or black widow
I have used the Lexa 300 P 5.1 ratio w/ JW power handle for the past three years and it is my goto fluke reel with a couple 100 keeper fluke. I have fished this reel hard for three years without any issues to date

Re: fish poison or black widow
I cant comment on Kevin Bogan, but I have the black widow and really like it. One member mentioned guides. The guide next to the tip did break (the foot, not insert). They did honor warranty
