I live in Vernon, as of yesterday still a lot of open water on lakes in Sussex county. Up on the wawayanda mountain lakes look like giant slushies with big areas of open water.

Re: Hows Cutting Holes This Weekend

after this weekends cold snap we should have the big lakes locked up, the only thing that concerns me is the winds forecasted for every day except friday. usually if the water is semi locked up and it gets down to 0 or below they will lock up even w a slight wind. next week we should be out on the deep water jigging. If I go out im gonna just bring the shanty/heater and an auger, Id rather jig all day

i want to be out on there, but i drive past it every day and it looks like crap...if it's windy, the cold won't matter. i really don't have high hopes of the good water freezing, but fingers crossed!

the small shallow coves will have ice but the main lake will not.just have to be careful

Definitely going to need a shanty. They are predicting -10+ windchill on Saturday.

Be safe out there

Honestly this half and half purgatory is pissing me off limiting the fishable areas of lakes. Either freeze it all or leave it all open. Damn you Mother Nature!

I'm with you on that one Chris but I'm leaning more towards leave it open and don't drain them so I can put my boat in lol

Re: Hows Cutting Holes This Weekend

It's f-ing cold out on the ice right now. It's going to be even colder this weekend and it's going to be windy. I'll let the weekend warriors have the ice all to themselves this weekend. 0 degrees and 15-25 winds isn't good for me or the fish, they'll flash freeze in those temps unless you have a shanty. For those of you who are going out this weekend bring a spud bar. The wind died down this morning and the place I'm fishing skimmed over but there is still open water. Even though it's cold there is still a lot of sketchy ice because it's been a warm winter.

leaving the bigger stuff alone.i will be on the small lakes that never opened up
and have been making ice the few nights.

Re: Hows Cutting Holes This Weekend

I'm still seeing open water on some of the lakes in West Milford/Kinnelon area, but I also saw people on the lakes, even those with open water.

By this weekend I think a lot of the open water will be iced over, but be really careful wherever you go. A lot of the ice will be new and thin.

I'll probably skip this weekend because I'm a fair weather ice angler and windy, single digit temps are not fun for me, but early next week when it warms a bit I will certainly be on the hard water.

Yea. It was COLD. No shanty. Had to stay moving to fend off the chill.

Re: Hows Cutting Holes This Weekend

went out looking early Saturday morning only to find allot of open water and poor edges.thought that this cold would have locked the small stuff up but I was wrong.took a ride to some old haunts that we can't fish anymore and one was iced up good.was going to give it a try but the trespassing ticket would not have been worth it.
