Penn Peerless 9.....

Thoughts?

Was given 4 by a non-fishing buddy of mine. Have never been a Penn guy but intrigued by these reels.

2 in ok shape 2 beat up. Threw one on a scale and came in at 12.9 oz.

Gonna clean em up and see what's what. Tips on servicing and replacing stuff much appreciated.

Nice little fluke reels. I know a guy that loves fishing one of those. Not sure if you going to like them since your not a penn guy but give it a try.

Started pulling them apart...cleaner than I thought they'd be.

They are nice little fluke reels. If you've serviced other Penn's before then they are very similar. I know a private boat guy that fishes 3-4 times a week and that's all he uses on the boat. And parts are pretty readily available.

The chrome shines up quick with a quick wash down with a brillo pad.
Clean em and grease em up.
These reels don't die as long as you give em a good greasing every year.

Thanks for the input boys. Pulled 2 of the 4 apart and like I said, cleaner than I expected.....BUT saving the worst 2 condition-wise for last.

Ordered up drag washers and metals yesterday. Dry or lubed? Been reading everything I can and seems like its a 50-50 consensus.

Gonna work on making my own power handles as well. I'll post what that try produces!

I like using Cal's grease on my drags.

Got the first done. I know this must be elementary to you seasoned reel guys but this is my first rodeo pulling any reels apart. Always farmed it out.

Not a bad dis and re assembly. Very basic reel. The dog and the dog spring were a MF for my fat fingers! Put in HT-100's. Went the lube vs dry route with Cals.

Working on some mini power handles now.

Nice , just to let you know that sleeve comes apart from the bridge. There's a washer under there too. You just need to tap the pin out and the sleeve will come up from the bridge. I like laying my pieces out starting from right to left so when it goes back its like reading starting left to right.

Toyed around with making some mini power handles today. Took a pic off a google search of a penn jig master power handle.

Drew up a smaller version on cardboard then onto some aluminum stock. Will keep tweaking. Mini power knobs will be next.

Got 3 of 4 done. #4 was a complete train wreck. Broken gears and missing parts.

If anyone needs small parts off the reel let me know.....put everything in a bag for future parts use.

Homemade handle arms fit nicely.

First try at power handles in the shop was a major fail!...:p

May scour ebay and see what handles are out there...OR try and retro fit larger Bakelite knobs to handles I made...

Thanks. Still looking at ebay. This is a just a winter toy-around project. Dont even know how much I'll use them, but fun putting them together nonetheless.

Found Garcia Mitchell knobs that would fit the bill nicely for only 3 bux.

Kinda gonna be reel with mix-match parts from different brands out there.
