Fall feeding piglets!
The fresh water fishing is starting to get good it seems (everywhere but cong haha). went out two days. first day after work with just a little time ended up nailing two buckets and 2 cookie cutter bows. the one largie was a nice fat 17.5". Unfortunately when i had to leave the birds started diving on the complete opposite side of the lake...couldn't get there with the trolling motor, didn't even bother.
thankfully i was able to get back saturday and told my buddy to come along cause i thought it would be good. I can't say it was fast and furious action because we had to put in some searching and lure working efforts, but we ended up landing a handful of cookie cutter bows and a half dozen bronze backs...and when i say they were pigs, i mean it! they were absolute sandbags! stomachs filled to the max! All smallies were feeding mid depth or near bottom on points and flats off points, the bows were higher up, 10' over 40 depth. green goblin flies did most of the damage on the bronzes, bows seemed to prefer silver surfer flies. http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...blin%20fly.jpg http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...t2c%2014in.jpg http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...20dropshot.jpg http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...%20SA%2016.jpg |
Re: Fall feeding piglets!
Some awesome fish! Do you catch most of your fish from a boat on flies with a spinning or casting rod?

Re: Fall feeding piglets!
Great fish, bronzeback is a beast - hope for more before ice in....

mudcat, the set up is on a cabela's depth master (need enough spool space to hold some #30 leadcore so the fly stays down in the water column). The last 40' or so of the line is lighter leader though so still have to keep the drag loose and be careful with the fight. |
Re: Fall feeding piglets!
Awesome.....did you get any measurements on that last smallie?

Re: Fall feeding piglets!
Awesome work on the giant smallies and the mixed bag of other species!

Re: Fall feeding piglets!
Great looking catch all around bro! Those piglets definitely been spending time at the trough. Great looking NJ bass!!

Re: Fall feeding piglets!
That sounds like a very specific and fine tuned method you got for catching them deep with flies, nice!

Re: Fall feeding piglets!
Hi Crisper, I am hoping you can provide more information on the flies you use. Maybe a picture or where we can get them. Just FYI, I caught a nice smallmouth bass out of the thermocline last week trolling a spoon on lead core. It is not uncommon for me to catch the bass in the "cline", I think the bass are chasing the herring.
